 Bridges of Understanding supports the organization Sport 4 Peace and their unique "Iraq to America" project, which has recently brought 10 Iraqi girls interested in improving their basketball skills and global knowledge to the US for a special two week trip.
Through the organization Sport 4 Peace, a group of 10 Iraqi girls along with their basketball coaches were given the opportunity to travel to the US for a special two week trip in Washington, DC and Knoxville, Tennessee. In the nation's capital, the teens had fun visiting local schools, a wheelchair basketball league, the Smithsonian, and a WNBA practice and game in the nation's capital. During the following week, the girls spent their time playing at two Pat Summitt basketball camps, touring the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, hiking in the Smoky Mountains, and visiting local homes for dinner and entertainment.
"A vision that came about nearly one year ago while I was standing
in an Iraqi gymnasium guarded by Kurdish soldiers has now become a reality
for 12 Iraqi girls with a dream to visit the USA and learn more about
basketball, while making new friends..."
Following the organization's "Iraq to America" project, Sport 4 Peace will return to Iraq in July 2009 to hold the second annual basketball camp for girls, women, and coaches. Sport 4 Peace is committed to providing new, healthy, fun, and safe sporting opportunities for Iraqi girls and women.
