Bridges of Understanding supports the Middle East Science Fund (MESF), launched at the Fourth Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates in 2008.  MESF aims to promote innovative scientific research projects and development in the region, encourage young scientists to engage in collaborative projects that will help advance scientific research fields in the Middle East, and foster multinational cooperation in a not-for-profit framework.

Its objectives are to promote innovative and high-quality scientific research and development; to promote cooperation between regional institutions in the areas of medicine, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and economics; to encourage research of relevance to the region, in energy, water conservation, food and agriculture, natural resources, technology, and medical and health issues; to sponsor joint projects related to the activities between young scientists, with the aim of strengthening partnerships and stimulating dialogue, interaction, and information exchange; and to sponsor joint scientific conferences and gatherings hosted by educational institutions and young scientists in the region.

MESF will select up to five research projects each year, based on scientific value, impact and relevance, applicability, suitability of resources, budget, and duration.  As of October 2009, MESF has supported 9 international conferences, established collaboration with over 12 regional institutions, and had received approximately 40 eligible scientific proposals for their support.  MESF also looks to partner with US academic institutions to develop exchange programs for students from the Middle East and the United States.  Through its work, MESF strives to empower youth, further education, and enhance cross-cultural and international communication and collaboration.
